Which garage door opener is right for my garage?
Chain, belt, screw or wall-mount. The right one depends on what's above the garage, the ceiling, the door and the weather — not on which box is on the shelf. Eight quick questions.

What's above or beside the garage?
How this works
Every opener does the same job; the differences are noise, space and how they cope with your door and climate. Each answer counts for or against the four drive types — a bedroom over the garage counts against chain and screw, a clear ceiling counts for wall-mount, extension springs rule wall-mount out — and the result shows the reasons, not just a name.
Features come from your other answers: phone control, battery backup, a quieter motor, a keypad. It runs in your browser and nothing is sent anywhere.
It can't see your door. Before any opener is fitted the technician checks the door's weight and balance, because an opener on a badly balanced door wears out early whatever type it is.
Questions people ask
- What is the quietest type of garage door opener?
- Belt-drive and wall-mount (jackshaft) openers are generally the quietest. A belt replaces the metal chain with a reinforced rubber belt, and a wall-mount sits beside the door rather than on the ceiling. A DC motor with soft start and stop helps too.
- What horsepower garage door opener do I need?
- It depends on the door's size, weight and balance. Light single doors are commonly paired with a 1/2 HP class opener and heavy wood or oversized doors with something stronger. Because the springs, not the opener, carry the weight, a technician confirms the right size after checking the door's balance.
- When is a wall-mount opener the right choice?
- When you want the ceiling clear — for storage, a car lift or a high or sloped ceiling — or when there is very little room above the door for a rail. It needs a door with a torsion spring and some clear wall beside the door, which the technician checks.
- Do screw-drive openers work in cold weather?
- They work, but screw drives are the type most affected by big temperature swings, and they are louder than a belt. Where winters are hard and summers hot, a chain or belt drive is usually the safer choice.
- Do new garage door openers need battery backup?
- In California, new residential openers have been required to have battery backup since 2019. Some other places have their own rules. Anywhere power cuts are common it is worth having, because the door still works when the power is out.
- Can I open my garage door from my phone?
- Many current openers have Wi-Fi built in, and some older ones can take an add-on. The opener needs your Wi-Fi to reach the garage, so it is worth checking the signal there first.
